Jorge Álvares Foundation

Jorge Álvares (born late 15th century in Freixo Espada à Cinta)  was a Portuguese explorer. He is credited as being the first European to have reached China by sea (Delta do Rio das Pérolas) during the Age of Discovery thus initiating the Portuguese contacts between the two countries for more than five centuries.

In May 1513, Álvares sailed under the Portuguese Malacca captain Rui de Brito Patalim in a junk from Pegu. The expedition was accompanied by five other junks and Álvares himself was accompanied by two other Portuguese mariners. Based on information from their captain, they hoped to find trade.

During his navigation he built a stone monument on the island of Lintin (called Tamão or Tamen by the Portuguese), the first Portuguese construction in China.

Álvares later joined the venture of establishing the settlements in Tamão from around 1513 to 1514.

Following this visit, several trading posts were established in the province of Canton where, later, the famous warehouse of Macau was built.

He died on July 8, 1521 in Guangzhou or Canton (Tamão to the Portuguese) in Southern China.

The Jorge Álvares Foundation, founded on December 14 1999, is a private institution with corporate identity.

The main objectives of the foundation which bears his name are:

  • to engage in activities of a cultural, scientific, artistic and social nature; such activities are to be carried out, namely, within the framework of an inter-cultural dialogue, bearing in mind the specificity of Macao that results from a century-long Portuguese presence in that territory.

  • promote supportive actions to institutions established in Portugal that show dedication to the study and promotion of Macao.

  • to support the promotion of activities and initiatives linked to the diaspora of the people of Macau, fomenting a greater knowlwedge of Macao, its reality and future projection.
